The European Data Act
The Data Act is a key pillar of the European Commission’s European strategy for data. The Data Act establishes new rules for accessing, using and sharing data from devices connected to the internet, also known as Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The objective is to break up existing data silos and improve data availability in the European Union.
The Data Act aims to foster a competitive data market in Europe, creating incentives for innovation while ensuring fairness in the allocation of the value of data. The Data Act provides a wide range of opportunities for all enterprises, including start-ups and SMEs, to take part in the data economy and develop new business models. The Data Act also lays down rules that make it easier for customers to switch data processing services, which are mostly cloud services.
The Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation’s current plan is for the Bundesnetzagentur to act as the single point of contact for the implementation of the Data Act in Germany, and the Bundesnetzagentur has started preparing for this role.
